Music by The Piano Brothers

Eleanor Anderson, formerly of Erie and North East, PA, died Friday, June 19 at Canterbury Place skilled nursing facility in Pittsburgh, PA.

Born in Jamestown, NY in 1925, Eleanor received a B.A. from Houghton College in 1946. She married Andrew L. Anderson in 1947, and together they served churches as pastor and wife in Hazelton, PA; Oxford, NY; Freehold, NJ; Houlton, ME; Madison, WV; Beckley, WV; and Levittown, PA. Retiring to North East, PA, Eleanor and Andy continued to serve churches in the area and helped to found the Crossroads Community Baptist Church in Erie.

Eleanor took masters level courses in education and was a substitute teacher in different states. In WV, she taught full-time, becoming one of the state’s first kindergarten teachers. She was a freelance writer for several religious publications; was active in American Baptist Ministries in several states; and played piano and organ and led choirs at many churches.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Shirley, who died at the age of 16 in 1966. Her husband, Andy, died in 1997, and her middle daughter, Linda Ben-Ezra, died in 2003. After her health deteriorated, she moved to Pittsburgh in 2009 to live close to her youngest daughter, Laurie. She became a member of the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh and founded a women’s group, now called the Marys & Marthas. She started a Bible study at Canterbury Place and continued a ministry of loving and caring for others while she lived there.

Eleanor was also preceded in death by her parents, H. Paul and Linnea Cederholm Phillips, her brother, Maurice Phillips, and her sister-in-law, Marilyn Phillips Carpenter. She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Anderson; sons-in-law, Don Wentworth and Rev. H. Leon Ben-Ezra; and grandchildren Seth Ben-Ezra (Crystal), Jonathan Ben-Ezra (Sommer), Elizabeth Otulakowski (Tom), Adiel Gardner (Joshua), Gabrielle Worent (Jonathan); and twelve wonderful great-grandchildren.

Memorial gifts may be made to American Baptist International Ministries, P.O. Box 851, Valley Forge, PA 19482.

A viewing will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, June 22 at William D. Elkin Funeral Home in North East, PA. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 23 at 11:00 a.m. at the Crossroads Community Baptist Church, 5827 Old French Rd. Erie, PA.   Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery in Falconer, NY. A memorial service will be held in Pittsburgh at a later date.

Dear Laurie & Eleanor's loved ones,
We just learned of your wonderful Mom's passing. My husband Burr and I live in Madison, WV, so it has been years since we have seen your family. But we loved Eleanor & Andy so very much, even though the distance and years between us was great. I stayed in touch with Eleanor at Christmastime, and I always looked forward to her letters. I taught Kindergarten with her from 1973-1975, and I can truly say that she taught me more than I ever learned from books. She was a pioneer in the Kindergarten program in Boone County, and she taught with expertise and with love - she was a role model for every teacher who was lucky enough to work with her. She was an angel in every sense of the word. The world has truly withered a bit with her loss. May God bless you all with peace and comfort.
