Stuart Blair Garnow, age 98, of North East passed away Tuesday, August 27. He was born Feb. 9, 1926 to Harold and Henrietta (Voss) Garnow and was a resident of North East. He was preceded in death by his parents, his longtime companion Margaret Hesling, his sister Marie Jackson, a brother Gordon Garnow, and his niece’s husband, Tom Stanley.
Stu served in the Navy as Petty Officer 3rd class during World War II and was stationed at Pearl Harbor from 1943-1946. He was a graduate of North East High School. He worked in the office machine repair business for 35 years. Before he retired, he worked the last 7 years for the May Co. in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was a member of the Fuller Hose Fire Department for 16 years and was honored by being grand marshal of the 2018 Cherry Festival Parade.
He was an original member of the Lakeview Country Club and was one of the original “rock pickers”. When he was on the greens committee, he helped plant over 100 pin oak and locust trees. He was a member for 32 years and was an avid golfer.
Stu was a life member of the American Legion Post 105 and the VFW Post 4789. He played drums in the Firemen Legion band and the VFW Drum Corps. He also helped start Little League Baseball in North East.
After retiring, he and Margaret stayed at their cottage on Chautauqua Lake and in the winter, they spent time in Sierra Vista, AZ.
Stu is survived by his nieces, Suzanne Jackson of North East, PA and Janis Stanley of Slippery Rock, PA. He is further survived by his great nieces, Katie Stanley, Laura Stanley Bedell, Karen Stanley (Clint Lingenfelder) and great-great nephew Camden.
Stu’s family would like to thank Calla, Scott and the other Community Nurses and Hospice of North East, the Parkside nurses and staff, and Mary Meehl who were all so helpful this year. Also, thanks to Janice Fink for her special kindness to him.
Family and friends are invited to call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake St., North East, PA on Wednesday September 4 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service by Rev. William Ringer at 11:30 a.m. followed by a committal service with Full Military Honors at North East Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Nursing Services of North East, 7 Park St., North East, PA; Fuller Hose Co., 68 S. Pearl St., North East, PA.; or St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 30 Clinton St, North East, PA.
