Salvatore "Sal" Cerrie, 92, formerly of North East, PA and Dunkirk, NY, died on May 6, 2023 in his home in Lexington, KY. He was born on November 29, 1930 and is the son of the late Mary Cardinale and Joseph Cerri (both of North East, PA).
Sal met and married his beautiful wife, Elizabeth "Betty Ann" Reed in 1959 and the two were happily married for 57 years. They settled in Dunkirk, NY where Sal worked for the Cassadaga Valley Central Schools for 20+ years as an art teacher. Among his many accomplishments, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served overseas during the Korean War as a cryptologist. Following the Korean War, he pursued his teaching degree and graduated from Edinboro State Teachers College and received his Masters Degree from SUNY Fredonia. The avid Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres fan also worked part-time for many years at Tri-County News, US News and the Dunkirk Parks and Recreation division as a young man. Also notably, he was a long-time member of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Lions Club, Flying Aces RC Model Club, Hillview Golf Course and Holy Trinity Church of Dunkirk, NY. And in North East,PA, St. Joseph's Club, American Legion Post #165, the Green Meadows Golf Course, the Lakeside Golf Course, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moose Lodge #593 and St. Gregory's Church (North East, PA).
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Ann, his parents, and all of his brothers and sisters: Benjamin Cerri, Nancy Royek, Josephine Reed, Palma Reed and Frank Cerrie. He is survived by his children: Mark (Lisa of Lexington, KY,) Alan (of Indianapolis, IN), and Sallie Ann Roman (Jeff of Columbus, OH) - as well as his five beautiful granddaughters: Carly Cerrie, Nicholette Cerrie, Olivia Koller, Bella Cerrie and Kia Trocha.
Friends and family may call at the William D Elkin Funeral Home at 65 South Lake Street, North East, PA on Saturday June 24th, 10am-Noon. Officiating the service is Fr. Brooks from St. Gregory's Church. Graveside service will be held at St. Gregory's Cemetery following.
