Rosemarie (Szklenski) Slater

Rosemarie Slater passed away peacefully at home May 27, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born and raised in North East, Pennsylvania, Rosemarie—or "Rose" to those who knew and loved her—often reminisced about her childhood spent picking fruit in the fall, a cherished memory that reflected her deep connection to the community.

A proud graduate of St. Gregory School, Class of 1958, Rose was a lifelong member of St. Gregory parish. She met the love of her life, Carl Slater, at the North East Grape Festival. Their love story spanned more than 67 years and together, they raised six wonderful children.

In her younger years, Rose was active with the North East Little League. She later served for over 10 years with the North East Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary, including serving as president, faithfully volunteering in the Cherry Festival food tent. She also served as the treasurer for Crescent Hose’s ambulance service, greatly improving the ambulance service’s finances, enabling them to buy a brand new ambulance.

Rose and Carl were also devoted members of the Westfield, NY Moose and were among the founding members of the North East Loyal Order of Moose where they generously gave of their time to get the new lodge up and running.

Rose delighted in playing pinochle and preparing Polish food, especially her Christmas Chrusciki cookies.

Rosemarie is survived by her beloved husband Carl and their six children: Carl (Lynn) Slater of Ohio; Diane Slater of Erie; Robin (David) Boyd of North East; Bryan (Geraldine) Slater of North East; Gerald (Carmen) Slater of Virginia; and Douglas (Amanda Moodie) Slater of North East. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom brought great joy to her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Feliksa “Elsie” (Osiecki) Szklenski, as well as her brothers Michael, Stanley, and Edward, and grandchildren Christopher, Bryan, Rosemary and Jason.

Friends and family may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East, on Thursday, May 29th from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM and are invited to attend funeral service on Friday at 11 AM at the funeral home.  Officiating the service Fr. Thomas Brooks.  Interment will be held at Grahamville Cemetery.
