Nyla J. (Stetson) Phelps

Nyla J. Stetson Phelps, 89, died peacefully on August 4, 2022. She was born March 12, 1933 to William and Florence Speelberg. She married Lester Phelps on 3/24/1951 and started their family of misfits. Nyla was a “stay at home mom”, which included running the family farm. Mom did all the milking, etc. while keeping the house in order. Raising eight kids and Dad was like having three jobs. Mom never complained, always had an encouraging word, food on the table and clean clothes for us. Every holiday meal had a dish that she encouraged us to try. With no seatbelts and Mom’s lead foot, we all survived quick trips for parts. Some of her kids and grandkids inherited her lead foot. You know who you are. Thanks for listening, baking, cooking, sewing, gardening, enjoying different kinds of music and life lessons. We may not have had everything, but we had everything we needed. Mom, words can never say enough. Nyla is survived by her children Terry (Darla) Phelps, Sherry Reed, Shirley (Alan) Larsen, Cindy (Nick) Kopta, Cathy (Darl) Redlecki, Timothy (Beth) Phelps, Tommy (Colleen) Phelps and Tammy Snyder; her sister Jean Ferguson, brother-in-law Wayne Lewis, niece Brenda (Arden) Ohlsson, 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Nyla was predeceased by her parents, husband Lester in 2018, brother Donald Stetson, sister Kay Lewis, niece Pammy Cooper, daughter-in-law Sue Phelps and grandson Brian Reed. There will be a family gathering at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a library of your choice, Shriners hospital or by planting some flowers. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East.
