Mary Phelps Obituary

Mary (Beebe) Phelps, age 65, of North East, passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at UPMC Hamot. She was born on October 18, 1956 in Erie, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late Gerald Beebe and Josephine (Chimera) Abbey Beebe. Mary was formerly employed by Country Fair as a manager for over 20 years and was also a waitress at the Rusty Wheel Restaurant in North East. She was a member of St. Gregory Thaumaturgus Church. Mary was a warmhearted and caring individual who loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed helping those in need and was a mom and grandmother to all. Mary lived each day for her children but mostly for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid supporter of the North East wrestling program and was known as “Matside Grandma” and was the loudest cheerleader for all the wrestlers she knew for the past 35 years. She will be sadly missed by every- one. Mary was preceded in death by her nephew, Billy Abbey; sister, Christine Batts; and brothers, Richard Abbey, Gregory Abbey, Frank Abbey, and Thommie Beebe. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Chris Phelps whom she married April 19, 1976; children, Tonya Beebe (Bill), April Phelps (?), Heather Jones (Jake), Jesse Phelps (Evie), and Victoria Slaughenhaupt all of North East; brothers, William Abbey (Mary) of Harborcreek, Gerard Abbey of Harborcreek, Rodney Beebe of Arkansas, David Beebe of Erie, and Jerry Beebe of Erie; 15 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East on Tuesday 3:00 p.m. until time of a funeral service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Officiating the service is Fr. Thomas Brooks. At Mary’s request please wear tye dye attire to the funeral home. She loved her tye dye and Twizzlers, yes the red ones!!!
