NORTH EAST - Marilynn P. (Coombes) Krull, 87, of Erie, formerly of North East, died peacefully Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at Forestview Healthcare Center after a brief illness. She was born in Erie on July 31, 1935, daughter of the late Albert and Mary (Pope) Coombes. She graduated from Wesleyville High School in 1953 and in 1957 from Villa College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. As one of nine girls selected to be the first to graduate from that program, her nursing pin and cap are currently on display at the Gannon School of Nursing. For 26 years she dutifully served as a School Nurse for the North East School District.
An avid shopper and Frank Sinatra devotee, Marilynn was actively involved in developing a charter for establishing the formation of the North East Community Nurses Services. On summer Sundays she could be found attending services and concerts at the Chautauqua Institution, and for the last 25 years her winters were spent with her beloved husband, Lloyd, in and around Vero Beach, Florida. Along with her husband, Marilynn was a charter and life member at Lakeview Country Club where she played in the Ladies 9 Hole League; in 2001, she had a hole-in-one at the Ocean Village Golf Club in Fort Pierce, Florida – a feat which Lloyd proudly boasted on her behalf any time the subject presented itself. A former member of both the North East Ladies Bridge Group and the North East Cotillion Dance, Marilynn loved sunflowers, The Wizard of Oz, Regis Philbin, and dessert. Surveying the evidence of a life well-loved, Marilynn’s proudest accomplishment was earning the moniker of “Gram.” Their self-proclaimed biggest fan, Marilynn was at her happiest when she was spending time with her grandchildren. Whether watching her granddaughter perform on stage or cheering on her grandson at his hockey games, she radiated pride under a myriad of team colors, playbills, and high school buttons. Their success was her success, their accomplishments: hers. She will remain proud of them for eternity.
In addition to her parents, Marilynn was preceded in death by her sister, Guyla Jean Coombes (infant); step-sisters, Elizabeth Coombes Degnan, and Virginia Coombes, Lt. Col., USAF (Ret.); and brother, Bernard Coombes.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Lloyd (married February 15, 1958); daughter, Diane Sesler (Kevin Kosin); a son; brother, Arthur “Art” (Caroline) Coombes; sister-in-law, Janet Coombes; two grandchildren, Sarah (Michael) Misko, Adam (Tessa) Krull; two great grandchildren, Rosalind & Sloane Misko; a devoted daughter-in-law, Lori Krull; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday, November 11th, from 3-7 pm at Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street in North East. Funeral services will be held there on Saturday, November 12th, at 11 am, interment to follow at the North East Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to North East Community Nurses Services, 7 Park Street, North East; or Wayside Presbyterian Church, 1208 Asbury Road, Erie.
