John Arthur Mong, age 74, of North East, PA, passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at UPMC Hamot. He was born October 8, 1948, in Erie, PA to the late William L. Mong Jr. and Marilyn Davis Mong.
John was a graduate of Conneaut High School in Ohio. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Vietnam War. John was a machinist at General Electric for 36 years before retiring.
He is preceded in death by a brother, Philip Mong, and grandsons, Jesse Galloway and Adam J. Mong. He is survived by his wife, Mary Kleckler Mong; his children, Sarah Peelman (Dale) of North East, John Mong Jr. of North East, Scott Mong (Amy) of Wattsburg, and Adam Mong (Nicole) of Erie, grandchildren; Bryan, Alisa, Molly, Henry, and Allyson, great granddaughter; Elora, brothers; William David Mong (Karen Sue) of Dade City, Florida, Thomas Mong (Vickie) of Erie, and Steven Mong (Michelle) of Perry, Florida.
John was always an outdoor enthusiast, since he was a very young child and found solace in nature. From eating so many hard green apples until his stomach hurt, picking blackberries, jumping in swim holes, fishing the local streams and Lake Erie, hunting game, or just taking a walk in the woods. He played hard and worked hard. He was very proud to be a Vietnam Veteran, and the fact that he did not wait for the draft and willingly signed up. Even though he never spoke about his time there, shared war stories with buddies and endured nightmares all the rest of his nights, he was very proud to have served for his country. No one should be left behind to die alone. He passed surrounded by loved ones and will be deeply missed.
Friends and family may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Monday from noon until time of funeral service, with full military honors, at 1:00 p.m. Please send condolences to elkinfh.com
