Gordon E. Nelson, age 85, of North East, PA, formerly of Sherman, NY, passed away on Monday, November 13, 2023 at St. Vincent Hospital. He was born on July 26,1938 in Jamestown, NY to the late Clarance L. Nelson and Dorothy (Doolittle) Nelson Sauers.
Gordon was a dairy farmer for 45 years, and was formerly employed at Mercyhurst University in North East. He served in the United States Navy (1961-1963) at Rota, Spain naval station, where he served on the ship USS Antietam.
Gordon was a multi-talented performer under his stage name “Uncle Moonshine". His instruments included the acoustic guitar, a five-string bluegrass banjo, and harmonica, as well as singing while playing. Gordon was a song-writer, poet, and writer of short stories. He was known to electrify and energize an audience with his talent and stage presence.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, William E. Sauers.
He is survived by his brother, Dennis Sauers, of California and close friends, Dave Licata and Jay Gillard.
Family and friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Private interment will be held at the Lowville Cemetery. Please send condolences to elkinfh.com.
