Eleanor Grace Alonge 89 years of North East, PA and The Villages, Florida died 14 days following the passing of her husband of 69 years. Her loving, kind, and caring heart could not beat anymore and she passed peacefully at home, surrounded by her sons, on June 22, 2023. Eleanor was born to Dr. Lawrence J. Amenta and Josephine (Galbo) Amenta on April 24, 1934 in North East, PA. She remained a resident of North East most of her life having graduated as Salutatorian of the first graduating class of St. Gregory High School in 1952. When she was in 8th grade, she began studying Church organ and that year and many years after high school she was organist or Mass and Benediction at St. Gregory Church. During her last three years of high school, she was employed at Anderson’s Drug Store and after graduation she worked in the Payroll Department of General Electric in Erie. After General Electric moved its refrigerator division to Kentucky, Eleanor was employed in the office of Welch Foods in North East where she worked nights in the Shipping & Receiving, Personnel, Payroll and Production Planning Departments. At age 40, she attended Villa Maria College, where she was a member of the first Weekend College and majored in Business. After her retirement from Welch Foods, Eleanor and her husband spent their winters in The Villages, Florida. They also took trips to Italy visiting their ancestral home towns in Sicily. Eleanor was able to speak, read and write Italian and Sicilian. She enjoyed listening to the Festa Italiana, Italian Hour on the radio every Sunday morning. She also enjoyed genealogy, reading, music and her delicious recipes have been handed down.
After her marriage to Joseph J. Alonge on August 15, 1953, they were blessed with three sons who were their pride and joy. She is survived by Dr. John L. Alonge (Karen) and their children Gregory Alonge of Millcreek and Michelle Keytel (Wesley), great-granddaughter Leanna of Louisville, KY and Gerard J. Alonge of North East and Joseph J. Alonge of Millcreek.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents and sister Marianne (Amenta) Sherrange and brother Cosmo Amenta. Surviving her are siblings Eloise (Amenta) Coxe of Ashtabula, OH, Carole (Amenta) Kingsley (Richard) of Wake Forest, NC, Dr. Lawrence Amenta (Carol) of Girard, PA and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and are invited to a Prayer Service on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gregory Thaumaturgus Church, 48 South Pearl Street, North East. Interment will be held at St. Gregory Cemetery.
