Robert “Bob” Newara
Robert “Bob” Newara, age 79, of North
East, died on Friday January 4, 2019 at UPMC
Hamot. He was born on August 21, 1939 in
Erie, Pennsylvania to the late Anthony and Josephine
(Rizzo) Newara. Bob was a lifelong
resident of North East. Bob
served in the United States Navy
aboard the USS Intrepid in boiler
maintenance. He attended Gannon
University. He was employed by
Welch Foods in North East and
Westfield for over 40 years until his
retirement in 1999.
After retirement, Bob was
employed at the William D. Elkin
Funeral Home for several years. He was extremely
community minded and spent his adult life serving
the people of North East. In 1994 he was given a
County of Erie Citation by County Executive, Judith
M. Lynch. He was honored for serving as a member of
the Erie County Metropolitan Planning Commission;
Council President on the North East Borough committee
(six years); Erie Council Representative (fourteen
years); Coastal Zone Management Steering Committee;
North East Street Commission; poll worker for
elections; and currently a member of the North East
Township Planning Commission. He was a member
of St. Gregory Church, Romeo Breakfast Club, and
served as secretary for the Lakeside Wednesday golf
league. Throughout his life he enjoyed family, friends,
golfing, coaching Little League Softball, and was an
avid Red Sox baseball fan. Bob had a kind heart, gentle
soul, and was loved by all who had the privilege of
knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles,
Paul, Joseph, and Anthony Newara; a sister, Rose Taylor;
an infant sister, Sarah Newara; a brother-in-law,
Bernard Lyons; and a son-in-law, Harold Buterbaugh.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years,
Judith (Johnson) Newara whom he married October
7, 1961. Daughters, Nadine Burkhart (Dan) of North
East, Patricia Strine (Marty) of Ripley, and Kathleen
Babins of Millcreek; brothers, Louis Newara of North
East, Raymond Newara (Gwendolyn) of California,
Carl “Jerry” Newara (Dolores) of North East, and Vincent
Newara (Mary Jo) of North East; sisters, Angeline
Martina of California and Shirley Sgarlata (Sam) of
California; grandchildren, Tara, Alicia, Jenna, Jennifer,
Danielle, Leah, Zachary, Megan, and Samuel;
sister-in-law Dolores Lyons; also several nieces, nephews,
and cousins.
Friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral
Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East on Tuesday
2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. and are invited to attend a Prayer
Service on Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. at the funeral
home followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 A.M. at St.
Gregory Church. Interment with Full Military Honors
will be held at St. Gregory Cemetery. Memorials may
be made to the Erie ANNA Shelter, 1555 East 10th
Street, Erie, PA 16511 or North East Fire Department,

Bob was a gregarious neighbor and a great community member that all of North East will miss. My deepest sympathy to all of his family. May your memories and deep faith help guide you through the transitional time ahead.

Dear Judith and your entire family. Joe and I are out of town, but wanted to express our sincere sympathies to all of you. Joe has many wonderful stories about Bobby and his brothers. He will be greatly missed.
