John Mason Sprague
John Mason Sprague, age 87, of North East,
died on Monday, October 1, 2018, at home,
surrounded by his family. He was born on
February 7, 1931, in Erie, Pa., the son of the late Theodore
Mason Sprague III and Edith
(Gilmore) Sprague.
He graduated North East High
School and the University of Cincinnati,
earning a Bachelors of Science
Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
John served actively in the United
States Air Force and United States
Army in the roles of Squadron
Commander, Traffic Management
Officer, and Vehicle Maintenance
Officer. He also served in the New York Air National
Guard and the United States Army Reserves. After his
military career, John was employed as a mechanical
engineer by the United States Department of Defense
for 30 years until retirement. He was a member of
the First Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the
church choir for several years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by brothers, Theodore Sprague IV and Reid Sprague;
and sisters, Margaret Allbright and Dorothy Sprague.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gabriele
(Brosius) Sprague, whom he married on August 13,
1956; and children, Harriet Sprague of Champaign, Ill.
and Peter Sprague (Kelly) of Big Rock, Ill.
Friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral
Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East, on Friday
from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to
the American Cancer Society Erie Chapter, 2115 West
38th Street, Erie, PA 16508.
