Joseph I. "Joe" Kaufmann, age 86 of North East, died on Monday October 27, 2014 at Twinbrook Medical Center.

He was born on January 18, 1928 in North East, PA to the late Leonard and Theresa Hess Kaufmann.

Joseph attended North East High School for three years and Academy High School for a year where he graduated in 1945.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945 and was discharged in 1947 after having served most of his Navy time in the Pacific Theater during World War II and then later stationed in Okinawa.

Joseph was employed with the N.Y.C. Railroad for four years, Taccone Corp. as a foreman for a number of years,  Millco Corp. as a foreman, Swanson Erie Corp. and Herkules Corp. where he retired in 2003.  His work in the machinery trade totaled more than 50 years.  

He was a lifelong member of St. Gregory Church in North East.

Joseph enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and was an avid reader.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Kaufmann Jr., sisters, Ann Sherman, Theresa Salchak, and Rita Freeman.

Jospeh is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Josephine (Josie) Arrigo Kaufman, whom he married June 24, 1950; daughter Cheryl Roberts of Erie; three grandchildren, Ashley Jo Kaufmann, Teri Roberts, and Ryan Roberts all of Erie; seven great-grandchildren, Kaden and Landon Woodward, Giulianna and Natalia Nuara, Jordan Jaggi, and  Chloe and Evelyn Mae Roberts; sisters, Helen Marie Hemmis of Erie and Elizabeth Wilcox of Burr Ridge, Ill; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 S. Lake St., North East on Wednesday 3-5 and 7-9 and are invited to attend a funeral service on Thursday at 11:00 am at the funeral home.  Officiating Father Thomas Brooks.  Private interment St. Gregory Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to St. Gregory Church, 136 West Main Street, North East, PA 16428 or to the charity of one's choice.  Please send condolences to
